Srimad Bhagavatham - Chapter 8 - Killing of Various Demons and Lord Brahma's Prank

In the song celestial "Bhagvat Gita", told by Lord Krishna himself, he comes into the world to protect the good and devotees, when they are subject to intolerable hardships by the wicked called Demons. From the dawn immemorial, wicked people by virtue of their super power have always subjugated and persecuted the weak and innocent. Even as a child, Krishna killed a number of demons like Vatsasura, Bakasura and Aghasura. They were all friends of Kamsa and his agents sent to kill him.

His deeds attracted the attention of everyone including the demi gods. Lord Brahma has been assigned the function of being a Creator. He wanted to test Krishna. One day while Krishna was playing with his friends, he hid all their calves. When Krishna was assigned to look for them, Brahma made his friends also disappear and hid them. When Krishna realized his handiwork, he just created all the calves and friends out of his own free will. No one could spot the difference. Brahma returned after a moment, which is equal to one earth year. He could not believe his eyes. He then realized that Krishna was the supreme almighty himself. He personally appeared before Krishna and apologized to him. He returned the original cowherd friends and calves to Krishna. For one whole year, none of the parents of children or the mothers of the calves realized that they were not the real children.

Subsequently, he killed another demon called Dhenukasura along with his friends. Thus it would be noticed that all these demons were killed before Krishna was five years old. Though they were demons, they all received their salvation because they were killed by the supreme lord himself. This is because all these demons were fallen angels. They were cursed to become demons for their misdeeds. Their only salvation was to get killed by the supreme lord and get back to godhead. Krishna liberated them.

As per Vedic philosophy, a soul never dies and is subjected to repeated births and deaths. Only exalted souls get salvation from this repeated cycle. Salvation or "Moksha" is most sought after in Vedic societies by good and holy men and women. It is also the most difficult and one has to go through trials and tribulations. It is also believed that good souls are tested more to see their resoluteness. The evaluator is the supreme lord himself.
